An Ayurvedic view of Health |
The resurrection of Ayurveda and the growing awareness
about Ayurvedic treatment have given rise to a
fresh hope among people across the globe, irrespective
of status, caste, creed and color. Ayurveda is
increasingly being looked upon by modern man as
the panacea for all illness and enhancer of feminine
beauty. Not only is Ayurvedic medicine being used
for curing maladies, it is also being increasingly
put to use by beauticians and cosmetic companies
all over the world.
There is now a very strong conviction among the
general public that medicines extracted from plants
and herbs used in antiquity and in the Middle
Ages for treatment are the best medicines, having
no toxic or any other harmful effects on human
body. Ayurveda thus forms the foundation of much
modern pharmaceutical research, with more and
more modern medicines being prepared from medicinal
herbs and shrubs rather than synthetic chemicals.
In fact, the negative effects of modern medicines
and their toxic effects have led scientists to
fall back upon Ayurveda with more and more people
across the world eagerly opting for the natural
and herbal cures.
According to Ayurveda, health is a participatory
ongoing process of achieving and maintaining a
dynamic balance in all the aspects of life through
the means of comprehensive natural therapies customized
to suit the individual's psychosomatic constitution
and the current imbalance. The goal of this process
is not only to heal disease and to re-establish
balance but also to prevent disease and to promote
positive health.
The greatness of Ayurveda lies in its views about
health.
- Health is a process - not a state.
- This process is ongoing - not a one time
attempt.
- The process is participatory; the person
must take responsibility for his or her health
and not depend on an expert to fix it.
- The dynamic balance needs to be achieved
in all aspects of life; physical, biochemical,
intellectual, emotional, behavioral, spiritual,
familial, social etc.
- Therapies need to be comprehensive, considering
all aspects of life like nutrition, natural
medicines, exercise, rest, emotions, and lifestyle.
It's not limited to drugs and surgery.
- Therapies need to be natural - not synthetic.
- Therapies need to be customized to suit the
individual - One size does NOT fit all.
Ayurveda believes in complete positive health;
no wonder it's the best natural healer since last
5000 years.
